THREE DIE IN BUS CRASH ON RETURN FROM BESTIVAL
51-seater sus overturns on return journey, with victims suffering ‘life-changing’ injuries
Three people have been killed and several others seriously injured when a coach crashed into a tree and overturned near a tunnel in Surrey while returning from Bestival.
The coach crash took place close to the Hindhead tunnel in Surrey at 23:50 on Monday. The coach is reported to have left the road and struck a tree before the 51-seater vehicle overturned.
Three were pronounced dead at the scene while the injured were taken to hospitals in the area. One of the injured was described as having suffered ‘life-changing’ injuries.
Inspector Richard Mallett of local police described the crash as a ‘significant impact’.
“I understand the road was dry. We cannot see any reason that the road conditions would have had any effect on what occurred,” he told press.
“This has been declared a major incident and we are working with our colleagues from the other emergency services and other partner agencies to provide a co-ordinated response in line with agreed protocols,” said Surrey Police Assistant Chief Constable Jerry Kirkby in an official statement.
“Our thoughts remain with the relatives of the dead and the injured at this time and we are working very hard to notify their next of kin.”
