Jamie Robbins: World Series Of Poker Main Event Final Table Or Bust

Robbins Looking To Improve On 2009 11th Place Finish
by Julio Rodriguez

Jamie Robbins has been here before and he knows what it will take to make the World Series of Poker main event final table. Now he just has to actually do it.

The 38-year-old former online pro from San Diego finished 11th in 2009, securing $896,730, the biggest payday of his career. But the day was bittersweet, knowing he came so close to becoming a member of the November Nine.

“I was card dead that entire last day and then when I finally picked up a hand with 14 players left, I had my aces cracked all in preflop against James Aikenhead,” said Robbins. “I remember Antonio Esfandiari was telling the table that getting that deep was a once in a lifetime opportunity. In the back of my mind, I knew that wasn’t true. I knew I’d be back.”

Robbins has already secured $62,021, but with a near average stack, he’s looking for much, much more.

“I’m final table or bust,” he admitted. “I said that on the first day of play and I’m sticking to it. Anything short of that goal will be a major disappointment for me. The money is great, but I need to be in that final nine to considering this tournament a success.”

Other than Sam Holden and Eric Buchman, Robbins is quite possibly the most mentally prepared player still remaining in the tournament and says that his deep run in 2009 gave him invaluable experience.

“I really learned about the fatigue factor that goes along with playing a tournament of this stature,” he said. “This is the time of the event when people start to fade or make bad decisions that they never would have made on day 1. I’m just playing my game, but I’m making sure that I’m well prepared for the grind, because right now, it’s the players who make the fewest mistakes that survive the longest.”

Gambling addicts prefer poker machines to online or sports betting

By Miles Kemp

TELL US: Is it time to get rid of pokies?

FOUR out of every five problem gamblers in South Australia are addicted to pokies – despite the growth of online and sports betting.

A profile of problem gamblers treated by the Flinders University School of Medicine shows less than 1 per cent said they had a problem gambling online but 83.9 per cent admitted to poker machine addiction.

Flinders University Professor of Psychiatry Malcolm Battersby said experts did not know why a boom in sports betting and online gambling had not yet translated to an increase in problem gamblers.

In recent months, anti-gambling advocates have switched their focus to newer forms of gambling, especially the  promotion of betting odds  during AFL games.

They have criticised the use of gambling advertisements without legal warnings at AAMI Stadium, incorporation of betting odds during the Wimbledon championship on Channel Seven, AFL coverage on Seven and rugby league coverage on  Channel Nine.

Professor Battersby said the latest figures showed that the Flinders University service treated around 800 problem gamblers in 2010-11.

They reported problems with TAB gambling (10.8 per cent), casino games (3 per cent), Keno (1.1 per cent) and lotteries, private gambling and card games (less than 1 per cent). “People have said for a long, long time: `Look out, here comes a tsunami of people with problem gambling’ because of the new forms of gambling and we have not seen that yet,” he said.

“One researcher has evidence that while problem gambling in the newer forms of gambling is increasing, we are yet to see the increase in people seeking help.

“We don’t know why is the short answer. But like all young people, perhaps those who are taking up the new forms of gambling just don’t seek help.

“Around 20,000 people have a gambling problem in total but only 2000-3000 come for help.”

Professor Battersby said researchers still expected new forms of gambling would create problems. “The average time it takes for people to come to our service for pokie gambling is five to seven years, usually when they hit rock bottom or have some major crisis in their life,” he said.

D’Angelo Plays & Slays ‘Em at Boonnaroo

dangleo (at bonnaroo)

*Hey y’all, D’Angelo is back on the music scene!

The man who lets his music do the talking,  made his first U.S. appearance in 10 years at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Tennessee over the weekend.

“I’ve been waiting 12 years to say this — ladies and gentlemen, D’Angelo!” Roots drummer Questlove announced to a packed house during the festival’s annual “Superjam.” By the way, former guitarist for The Time, Jesse Johnson, also backed D’Angelo.

For those who were there, they saw the artist dually play his keyboard and his guitar as he sang classics like Funkadelic’s “Hit It & Quit It,” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Have You Ever Been (to Electric Ladyland).” Interestingly, he did not perform any of his own songs.

Never one to say a whole lot, the reclusive performer’s only interaction with the crowd came at the end when he asked, “Do y’all wanna go home yet?” As expected, the crowd responded by asking for “One more song,” to which Questlove responded: “We don’t know any more songs. We crammed all those songs into, like, six hours (of rehearsal).”

Don’t worry if you wasn’t there because you’ll be able to see D’Angelo at the Essence Music Festival on July 6.

AP Enterprise: Vegas rail: a gamble or good thing?

his Jan. 25, 2012, photo shows the site of a proposed station for the DesertXpress high-speed rail line to Las Vegas, background, at the end of the Dale Evans Parkway exit from Interstate 15, on the far outskirts of the Mojave Desert city of Victorville, Calif. The Obama administration is on the verge of loaning a Nevada company linked to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid as much as $4.9 billion to build a high-speed train from Victorville to the gambling palaces of Las Vegas. The project is anchored to the untested idea that car-loving Californians will pull off busy Interstate 15 on the edge of the Mojave Desert after driving about 100 miles from the Los Angeles area, then board a train for a 150 mph ride to the famous Strip. Photo: Reed Saxon / AP

On a dusty, rock-strewn expanse at the edge of the Mojave Desert, a company linked to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid wants to build a bullet train that would rocket tourists from the middle of nowhere to the gambling palaces of Las Vegas.

Privately held DesertXpress is on the verge of landing a $4.9 billion loan from the Obama administration to build the 150 mph train, which could be a lifeline for a region devastated by the housing crash or a crap shoot for taxpayers weary of Washington spending.

The vast park-and-ride project hinges on the untested idea that car-loving Californians will drive about 100 miles from the Los Angeles area, pull off busy Interstate 15 and board a train for the final leg to the famous Strip.

Planners imagine that millions of travelers a year will one day flock to a station outside down-on-its-luck Victorville, a small city where shuttered storefronts pock the historic downtown.

An alliance of business and political rainmakers from The Strip to Capitol Hill is backing the project that could become the first high-speed system to break ground under President Barack Obama’s push to modernize the U.S. rail network — and give the Democratic president’s re-election prospects a lift in battleground Nevada.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has publicly blessed the train — it means jobs, he says — and it’s cleared several regulatory hurdles in Washington.

Yet even as the Federal Railroad Administration considers awarding what would be, by far, the largest loan of its type, its own research warns it’s difficult to predict how many people will ride the train, a critical measure of financial survival, an Associated Press review found.

“It’s insanity,” says Thomas Finkbiner of the Intermodal Transportation Institute at the University of Denver. “People won’t drive to a train to go someplace. If you are going to drive, why not drive all the way and leave when you want?”

Construction cost projections have soared to as much as $6.5 billion, not including interest on the loan. Some fear taxpayer subsidies are inevitable.

Reid and other supporters point to research that shows 80,000 new jobs, but FRA documents show virtually all those would be temporary — no more than 722 would be permanent.

Victorville Mayor Ryan McEachron envisions a bustling transportation oasis with a hotel, restaurants, maybe even homes, on the proposed station site. He believes drivers can be enticed out of their cars, even in a region where the notion of rail travel can seem as distant as a New York subway.

The company is “going to have to market and market hard in order to get the ridership they need to support paying back the loan,” the mayor says. “I think you can change the thinking.”

Along with Reid, the president’s most influential Democratic ally in Congress, the plan is being advanced by casino developer and contractor Anthony Marnell II, whose credits include building the Bellagio and Wynn Las Vegas and who heads Marnell Companies, the majority shareholder in DesertXpress; project consultant Sig Rogich, a Republican adviser to two presidential campaigns who founded Nevada’s most influential lobbying and advertising company; and Canadian transportation giant Bombardier, a DesertXpress strategic adviser that wants to supply its rail cars.

A decision on the loan is not expected until mid-year, but the company has spent some $30 million sharpening its plan and refining ridership projections. Rising gas prices and increasing traffic congestion could help ticket sales, and the company is touting reduced air pollution from fewer cars on the road.

“It’s Victorville that makes the project work,” says chief executive Andrew Mack.

The Next Generation of Online Casino Games

Looking for Poker Bonus Codes? Get the TOP Poker Bonuses here

Casino game software companies are constantly developing new and improved games and applications that bring them to players’ computers, smartphones and other mobile devices. These new technologies are primarily aimed at enhancing the overall experience of players, ensuring that they will return again and again. The latest advances in casino game technology also make it possible for players to interact and participate more fully as they play, allowing them to see, hear and experience the game as if in a real “bricks and mortar” casino.

Networked Gaming

Networked gaming is one of the latest developments in online and mobile casino technology. Designed to operate with products and platforms from a range of vendors, networked gaming enables users to interface while playing, not only with the rest of the casino, but also with the wider world outside. This helps increase the efficiency and moneymaking capabilities of the casino, as well as giving the player unique opportunities to do more than simply concentrate on winning the jackpot. This type of connection might, for example, allow players to earn points or miles for travel while playing or earn club rewards while traveling. Networked gaming platforms offer every player a unique experience, adhering to high standards of the gaming industry while giving casinos the tools to make their gaming floor as strong as possible.

3-D Technology

Slots are extremely popular games at both online and mobile casinos and the latest machines feature 3-D graphics technology. The crisp images and video of these glitzy games are eye-catching and realistic; this coupled with the stunning audio that features the rattle of spinning reels, bells and whistles, makes for casino game floor experience online or anywhere you like. Other favorite casino games, including video poker and bingo, are also now available with 3-D graphics.

Real-Time Leaderboards

Online casino games enable players to participate in actual games and competitions and real-time leaderboards have made this form of play more appealing than ever. Real-time leaderboards show players their ranking in a particular game, alongside rankings from other casino games also in play. Everyone can check to see the people they are playing against in competitions, encouraging group and team play and fostering the atmosphere of the real casino without the requirements of dress and etiquette they often require.

Live Web Cams and Live Dealers

Web-cams have been around for years, but are now finding their way into the world of online casino games. Most commonly used with the card and table games, the live shots of players and the dealer allows participants to interact and immerse themselves in the game as they would in the casino.

The evolution of live dealers provides an enhanced gaming experience for players, while also hoping to convince those who believe that random number generator programs are unfair that they are, in fact, completely random. As internet connection speeds and streaming video technologies have improved, live dealing has become more popular. Having a real dealer or croupier conducting the game enables you to play baccarat, blackjack or roulette for real money in an environment as close as possible to that of a ‘live’ casino gaming floor.

Matt Juttelstad Wins 2012 World Poker Tour Lucky Hearts Poker Open

By Donnie Peters

Tuesday marked the fourth and final day of play at the World Poker Tour Lucky Hearts Poker Open at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida. When the final day began, only six players remained to fight for the $268,444 first-place prize. Already guaranteed $42,185 for making the final table, the player who finally walked away with the title was familiar with being in the top spot. After Day 1 and Day 2, Matt Juttelstad held the chip lead. After Day 3, he sat in second place. And after Day 4, Juttelstad was kissing the trophy and holding bricks of cash, following a 303-hand final table.

Keith Ferrera was the first player eliminated. During Level 23, with the blinds at 10,000/20,000/3,000, Ferrera’s final hand came up. It was the 89th hand of the final table, and Juttelstad raised to 45,000 from middle position. Ferrera reraised out of the small blind to make it 120,000. Play folded back to Juttelstad who didn’t back down, four-betting to 305,000. According to the WPT Live Update Team, Ferrera tanked for roughly two minutes and then moved all-in. Juttelstad made the quick call holding . Ferrera was at risk with .

The flop came down and Ferrera took the lead with a pair of jacks after out-flopping Juttelstad’s nines. The on the turn didn’t change too much, but Juttelstad did pick up four additional outs to a gut shot straight draw. Still, Ferrera was in front. The river card delivered a dagger to Ferrera with the and vaulted Juttelstad back to the lead with a set of nines. With no more cards to come and Juttelstad having his opponent covered, Ferrera was sent to the rail in sixth place. His payday was worth $42,185.

Five-handed play lasted over 100 hands before the next player was eliminated in fifth place. That player was Todd Jacobson during Level 26 with the blinds at 20,000/40,000/5,000.

From the cutoff position, Sharon Levin raised all-in for about 800,000. Jacobson called all-in from the button for less, holding about 600,000 in chips, and everyone else folded. Levin tabled for just one overcard to Jacobson’s .
Jacobson’s tournament life was still alive after the flop, but the on fourth street put Levin in front. Jacobson needed a ten, and only a ten, but the dealer rolled over the on the river. Jacobson earned $54,649 for his finish.

A couple of orbits around the table followed Jacobson’s exit before Levin fell in fourth place. He raised all-in
from the button for 810,000 and Gigi Gagne called from the big blind. Levin held but was in bad shape because he was dominated by Gagne’s . The flop, turn and river ran out and Levin was eliminated. He took home $73,344.
Uri Kadosh was sent to the rail in third place on the 271st hand of the final table. During Level 28, with the blinds up to 30,000/60,000/10,000, Juttelstad raised on the button to 125,000 and action folded to Kadosh in the big blind. Kadosh reraised all-in for a little over 1.3 million. Juttelstad called with . Kadosh was holding and was at risk. Following an flop, the turn and river completed the board to eliminate Kadosh. He earned $105,463 for his finish.

When heads-up play began, Juttelstad held the lead with 6.82 million in chips to Gagne’s 2.03 million. From there, Gagne couldn’t find any traction and never climbed above 2.3 million in chips as Juttelstad kept knocking her back whenever she tried to get something going. Then, on Hand #303, it all ended with a bang.
On the button with the blinds in Level 29 at 40,000/80,000/10,000, Juttelstad limped in from the button and Gagne checked her option to see the flop. Gagne led for 300,000 into the 180,000-chip pot, and Juttelstad just called.

The landed on the turn and Gagne moved all-in for 1.805 million. Juttelstad snap-called holding the for the flopped nuts. Gagne had turned a five-high straight with . Gagne was only able to stay alive with a chop, but the river produced the — not the six Gagne needed to keep the fight going. She was eliminated in second place, earning the largest score of her career — $158,194.
For his victory, Juttelstad scooped up the $268,444 first-place prize, which includes a $25,500 seat in to the WPT World Championship at the end of the season. Juttelstad also won the beautiful WPT trophy along with a second trophy from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

Facebook’s Value with Online Gambling?
According to a recent article over at Business Insider, a source close to Facebook predicts that the social gaming giant would generate $100 billion in revenue when online gambling is legalized in the U.S.
Yes, that’s right. One hundred billion dollars.

That number seems like a stretch considering Facebook did about $4 billion in revenue last year through advertising and gaming credits purchased through companies like Zynga. However, with a number of states now considering the legalization of online gambling in the U.S., Facebook’s immensely popular social network platform would undoubtedly be a popular spot for online gamblers.

Last November, Facebook announced it was developing plans to offer real-money gambling in the United Kingdom as early as 2012. That could likely serve as a test run for Facebook to expand into other markets where online gambling is legal.
