Had Katy Perry said “Yes” to American Idol, she would have seen even more money than Mariah.

A source tells Us Weekly that the show’s producers were so eager to have the pop star, 27, join the judging panel that they offered her $20 million dollars for a year-long contract.

“She was being hotly pursued,” the source explains. “They really wanted her.”

Ultimately, Perry turned them down, and execs have continued their search to replace Jennifer LopezSteven Tyler and Randy Jackson (who will vacate his seat on the panel and instead serve as a mentor during the upcoming season). A number of other names have been bandied about as possible Idol additions, including Nicki MinajPharrell WilliamsKeith Urban and Nick Jonas, though none at this point have been confirmed.

In late July, Mariah Carey officially signed on to judge, accepting an $18 million payday — making her the highest-paid judge on any music competition show.

Carey’s show predecessor Lopez, pulled in about $12 million per Idol season; Christina Aguilera negotiated a reported $10 million for the third season of The Voice, while Britney Spears will rake in an approximate $16 million for her stint on The X Factor.

Nicki Minaj Joins ‘American Idol’ as Judge

by

Eccentric hip-hop star Nicki Minaj is reportedly American Idol‘s newest judge, alongside five-time Grammy winner Mariah Carey for season 12.

The news comes after Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and entertainer Jennifer Lopez left the judging panel in JulyUs Weekly first reported the news on Monday, saying two sources exclusively confirmed Minaj’s Idol role.

Her heavyweight digital presence would give a big social media boost to American Idol. Most recently, she teamed up with Pepsi to live stream a concert in which people tweeting about it would have the chance to see their messages featured on a digital billboard in New York City’s Times Square.

Idol has had seven judges in its 11 seasons, including the original trio of Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson. Ellen DeGeneres, Kara DioGuardi, Lopez and Tyler also have had judging stints.

Minaj has performed on Idol in the past, including her hit “Starships” during season 11. Her 2010 debut album,Pink Friday, and this year’s Roman Reloaded both peaked at No. 1 on Billboard‘s albums chart.

Fox Broadcasting has yet to confirm the addition of Minaj or the return of veteran Idol judge Jackson. If true, Minaj would partner with Carey, who has more number one Billboard singles (18) than any solo artist in history.

“Mariah Carey is the real deal,” Fox’s Mike Darnell, president of alternative entertainment at Fox Broadcasting, said in a previous statement. “Not only is she one of the best-selling artists and performers on the planet and one of the world’s most gifted vocalists, she also is a successful songwriter, record producer and actress.”

Singer Nick Jonas and rapper Pharrell Williams are rumored to be in the running for judging roles, too, while Us Weekly says Jackson will become a mentor instead of staying on as a judge.

Competing televised singing shows have undergone judging and mentoring shake-ups as well.

On Fox’s The X Factor, global pop stars Britney Spears and Demi Lovato are now on the judges table, replacing Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger.

On NBC’s The VoiceGreen Day rocker Billie Joe Armstrong, Michael Buble, Mary J. Blige and Matchbox 20 frontman Rob Thomas round out the show’s star-studded cast. They join judges Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green.

‘American Idol’: Mariah Carey Nearing Deal As Judge

The rumor mill may be on to something.According to Deadline, Mariah Carey is in final talks to join the judges panel on Fox’s “American Idol,” reportedly asking for a salary of $17 million.

If the deal is sealed, Carey will join Randy Jackson, the lone “Idol” judge left standing in recent weeks. Both Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler left the show earlier this month.

“I’m telling the absolute truth in that I really have been torn” Lopez told Ryan Seacrest. “It all kind of worked together for a while, but it just gets more complicated … And something has to give and that’s, I think, where I am right now.”

Tyler was just as sad to say goodbye to the singing competition show
. “After some long … hard … thoughts … I’ve decided it’s time for me to let go of my mistress ‘American Idol’ before she boils my rabbit,” he said.

Randy Leaving ‘Idol’, Too?; Mariah Carey in Talks to Replace

On the second part of the two-night season finale, the Top 12 reunite on the stage one last time before host Ryan Seacrest reveals the newest American Idol.

*With Steven Tyler gone and Jennifer Lopez all but gone from “American Idol,” there are now reports that fellow judge Randy Jackson is also ready to leave the judge’s table as well – but not the show.

Us magazine reports that Jackson is considering a lateral move from judge to mentor on the show.

“Show producers think they need to freshen everything up now,” an unnamed source told the magazine.

On Thursday afternoon, Tyler announced his departure following a two-year run, citing a desire to go back to his first love, Aerosmith.  Hours earlier, fellow two-termer J-Lo said on the “Today” show that it might be “time for me to go.”

Rumored replacements for the judges have included Adam Lambert, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Miley Cyrus and Black Eyed Peas band mates Fergie and will.i.am – but the most serious talk has once again surrounded Mariah Carey.

The singer, who happens to be managed by Randy Jackson, was a front runner to join the show in 2010, but those talks fell through. Us reports today that producers are now “very close” to signing her to a deal.

But Deadline Hollywood reported on Thursday that Lopez is not completely out the door. Though the 42-year-old singer wants to return to performing full time and revive her movie career, negotiations for another season on “Idol” are reportedly still under way.

“She wants to do movies. She’s expecting her team to deliver,” a source close to Lopez reportedly told the site. “She feels she’d rather be on ‘Idol’ performing than judging everyone else.” The source said even with ongoing negotiations, Lopez is probably gone for good. “I think she’s off and it’s mutual,” the source said of the star, who was reportedly paid $12 million a year for appearing on the show. “They’re not inviting her back so quickly. Not because they’re unhappy with her. But because she wants a lot of f—ing money, a lot.”

A source at Fox described the ongoing negotiations as “complicated and fluid,” saying that things may get resolved very quickly, or drag on for a few more weeks.

Though “Idol” has held the top-rated crown in TV for eight years, the 2012 season saw it slip to #2 behind “Sunday Night Football,” as ratings continued a steady decline and the May finale drew record-low ratings.

Jermaine Jones booted off ‘American Idol’ by producers on Wednesday’s episode of Fox hit

BY ETHAN SACKS

N.J. man had several outstanding criminal warrants

Jermaine Jones‘ criminal past officially caught up with him on Wednesday night’s edition of “American Idol.”

The 25-year-old vocal instructor from Pine Hill, N.J., was cast out by the show’s executive producers Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick in a pretaped segment after the pair learned Tuesday that Jones had concealed a legal record.

“You were incumbent to tell us the truth about all of this, and it appears that you just haven’t on any level,” Warwick said in the video.

“I didn’t want to get judged,” said Jones. “I didn’t want to get penalized for anything that happened in the past.”

On Wednesday, The Smoking Gun reported that Jones is wanted in three New Jersey counties for failing to appear on several of criminal charges, including a 2006 narcotics charge.

He has also been arrested twice for giving police a fake name to avoid being hauled in on his outstanding warrants.

Jones was already on shaky ground on the show: Though he was one of the top 13 finalists picked by the judges, he was one of the bottom three male contestants last week, the first round where TV viewers voted.

His fellow competitors, however, would’ve voted to keep him on the show.

“It was all a shock to us that he’s gone right now. We’re going to miss him so much,” contestant Jessica Sanchez told Fox’s All Access. “He was so funny, so kindhearted. I wish he was still here.”

Jones isn’t the first “Idol” contestant to be dismissed from the show over legal troubles.

Season two’s Corey Clark was cut when the finalist claimed to have had an affair with then-judge Paula Abdul, a charge that was never substantiated. One season later, semifinalist Donnie Williams was booted off after a drunk-driving arrest.
