Connor Cruise backing father Tom Cruise in his divorce battle

London: Connor Cruise is backing his father Tom Cruise in his divorce battle.

The aspiring DJ – who the actor adopted with second wife Nicole Kidman – retweeted a message on twitter stating that family is the most important thing, in an apparent dig at Tom’s estranged spouse Katie Holmes, who filed for divorce on Friday (29.06.12) after five years of marriage.

The tweet read “#LaFamilia Always. Friends Come And Go, But Family Is Forever (sic).”

This is the first time Connor – who recently visited his father on the set of movie Oblivion in Iceland – has made any public reference to the split.

Meanwhile, it has been claimed Tom – who turns 50 today (03.07.12) – stopped Katie from signing up to a Dawson’s Creekreunion movie with former boyfriend Joshua Jackson.

A source told “[Producers] were begging her to sign on for a reunion movie. Tom said absolutely no way and thought going backward would be bad.

“Katie didn’t care how ‘low-brow’ he thinks ‘Dawson’s Creek’ is. She wanted to do the movie and reconnect with her fans. And have fun – something she rarely does anymore.”

It was recently revealed Katie reportedly fired her security team because they were too close to her estranged husband.

The bodyguard and driver – who worked for Tom before he met his third wife – were last seen with Katie on June 26 but have not been spotted with her since.

It is not known if they are affiliated with Scientology, the quasi-religion which is believed to be the reason behind Katie’s decision to leave Tom as she feared he wanted to send their six-year-old daughter Suri to a boot camp for the cult.

Katie Holmes Takes Suri Out for Ice Cream in New York City

There’s something about ice cream on a hot summer night that makes life a little sweeter.

That certainly seems to be the case for mother-daughter duo Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise, who stepped out together Tuesday night for a tasty treat at Sundaes and Cones in New York’s East Village neighborhood.

The pair smiled at each other and licked their way through a nighttime snack, despite the recent shakeup in their lives: After secretly planning to end her marriage, Holmes filed for divorce from Suri’s father, Tom Cruise, last week.

Holmes, 33, and Suri, 6, moved into a new, 3-bedroom apartment close to a gymnastics studio where Suri takes classes in New York City.

Cruise, who turned 50 on Tuesday, was supposed to spend his birthday with them in the Big Apple but traveled instead to Los Angeles and spent it with his teenage kids, Connor, 17, and Bella, 19.

Tom Cruise Turns 50 with Personal Life in Turmoil

This was not how Tom Cruise envisioned marking a milestone.

The movie superstar had made plans to celebrate his 50th birthday in Iceland Tuesday with his wife of five years, Katie Holmes, by enjoying the country’s outdoor wonders.

“Iceland is beautiful,” Cruise told PEOPLEseveral weeks ago. “We like hiking, and so we’ll have some nice hikes and maybe go camping.”

But everything changed last week when Holmes, 33, caught Cruise by surprise and filed for divorce in New York, then moved out of their apartment, taking daughter Suri, 6, with her.

Instead, Cruise has been solo in Iceland, where he’s filming the sci-fi flickOblivion, while his lawyers in the U.S. weigh how – and where – to respond to Holmes’s divorce papers.

The actor could file his own papers in New York, as Holmes did, or in Los Angeles, and the stakes are high, primarily in regard to custody.

Holmes is already reportedly seekingsole legal custody of their daughter, and all eyes will be on how Cruise will answer.

Katie Holmes believes Scientology now views her as a threat to the organization and has put a team on her tail … sources close to the actress tell TMZ.

We’re told Katie believes in recent weeks — as the discord between her and Tom Cruise grew — Scientology has been following her moves, especially in New York City.

This does not appear to be the mind of a paranoid person. People who have photographed Katie multiple times tell TMZ there have been several “mysterious” men and vehicles around Katie’s apartment and following her when she’s out.

Specifically … a white Cadillac Escalade and black Mercedes SUV (see above) have been seen near Katie’s NYC apartment for the past week.

FYI — there is a publication that has put a tail on Katie, but the people doing that are separate from the people Katie believes have been dispatched from Scientology.

It is unclear if the two vehicles that have been constantly spotted near Holmes’ pad are from Scientology or from the publication.

If Katie is able to keep the divorce in New York — where courts generally like to award sole legal custody to one parent or the other when there is conflict — proof that she’s being tailed could help her case.

We put in a call to Scientology … so far, no word back.

Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes divorce

One of Hollywood’s most talked about couples is divorcing after five years of marriage. Here’s a look back at their whirlwind romance.

Happier times

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes surprised the world with their unlikely relationship in April 2005, shortly after Holmes had called off her engagement to actor Chris Klein.

Holmes, Cruise flying solo even before split

Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise, that is.
Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise? They were all but absent from public view, save for the occasional tight-smiled red carpet appearance (their last was at the Oscars in February). Holmes, it seems, was flying solo in this made-for-Oprah marriage — so it comes as little surprise to relationship experts that she filed for divorce from her husband of five years, and for sole custody of 6-year-old Suri, on Thursday. (The official announcement came Friday).

  • Her possible thinking? “I’m doing this all by myself now (anyway), so I can just go ahead and make it official,” says Miami-based marriage therapist Jacqueline Del Rosario.Indeed, the second half of the statement from Holmes’ attorney, Jonathan Wolfe, is telling: “This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.” (Cruise’s rep says he is “deeply saddened” and is “concentrating on his three children.”)Recent history has shown that celebrity couples who make a spectacle of snuggling together don’t necessarily stay together (see: Heidi Klumand Seal, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher). Now, it appears the other extreme — pairs who lead seemingly separate lives — could be another kind of marital red flag. (The famously seldom seen together duo of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin have long been dogged by divorce rumors.)

“Part of being in love and being in a strong, healthy relationship is growing together, and you can’t grow together if you’re not spending time together. Like a basketweave, the lives must intertwine,” Del Rosario says. “When we’re not evolving and changing together, our lives diverge and we tend to grow apart. We become solo individuals.”

Except “a solo marriage is a front, and usually a child is put in the middle of it,” says New York psychotherapist Bonnie Eaker Weil, author of Make Up, Don’t Break Up.

And indeed, there was always a third person in the Holmes-Cruise marriage: their daughter. For Holmes, “her love affair has been with Suri,” says Kathryn Smerling, a New York-based family therapist specializing in divorce (who has not treated Holmes). “You see that she’s so animated when she’s with her,” and not when she’s with her husband. In those shots, she is “always posed. … She looks just like a movie star, not a real person.”

Theirs was a “child-centered marriage,” says Weil — a kind of union that can be doomed. “What kept them together this long was Suri.” Even before we saw her make her debut on the cover of Vanity Fair, Weil says, Suri was the star of this marriage.

“All those pictures show the closeness between Suri and Katie,” Weil adds. “That is not a coincidence. Usually that indicates that Tom and Katie are no longer close,” that all they have in common is their child.

“Solo marriage works for people that do not want that kind of closeness,” Weil continues. “I think Katie needed more closeness, and she got it from her daughter because she couldn’t get it from Tom.”

Successful couplings “need a balance of distance and closeness,” Weils says. “I call it the porcupine theory.” Two porcupines in an igloo have to stand near each other enough to stay warm, but not so close that they prick each other. Holmes and Cruise “weren’t even in the igloo together! Katie and Suri were in there.”

But the parent-child, vs. parent-parent, bond only works as a substitute for a little while. “Once a child grows up or leaves for school, whether kindergarten or college, that’s when a woman feels the emptiness and feels the loneliness” that her husband is unable to fill. That’s why talk of another baby — which Cruise swatted down earlier this month — was so significant. ( “I’m so happy with three,” Cruise told People magazine June 14.) With attention shifted to something new, a child “could have diluted this marriage even more and they could have lived together another five years,” on parallel planes.

Throughout the Cruise-Holmes partnership, Suri became a kind of decoy, Weil and Del Rosario agree. Tracing the trajectory of the family, Del Rosario sees a tactic increasingly common in Hollywood: Give a child an unusual name so people know it’s your child — “they’re branded for life.” Keep the media busy talking about your child, vs. what the public really wants dirt on — your marriage.

“It’s pretty smart,” says Del Rosario. “I don’t know how healthy it is, but I think it was a pretty good strategy that worked for them for a while.”
